Finally, a proper Grand Theft Auto IV
Right out of the box, Episodes From Liberty City at least functions, but still doesn't run as well as it should. Clearly Rockstar games have spent very little effort adapting the 'Episodes' to PC. You will need a brand new system to run it, and the recommended system requirements should be treated as the bare minimum.
But, soldiering on, you'll find two unique experiences which, together or separate, simply blow away Grand Theft Auto IV in every aspect. The characters have more presence, the voice acting is top notch, the script writing has been sharpened up, and the missions span a great variety. Both stories share similarities - both centre around characters who are trying to protect the ones they love, as they face threats from the world around them. But both feel unique within their own universes. Kleibitz's story involves his struggle against his brother's self declared biker war, and his drug addicted ex-girlfriend's trouble with the mob. Lopez's struggle involves his quest to make it in the world, whilst facing pressure from his mother's money troubles, his friends trying to drag him back to his old ways, and all the while trying to save his boss ('Gay Tony' Prince) from himself, and his associates.
This complexity in the stories, the intricate web of characters which surround you, and an extra layer of polish, create an experience which feels much deeper than that of GTA4, and subsequently feels far more satisfying. Given the price of entry, and the length of play time involved (about 10hrs an episode), 'Episodes From Liberty City' really should not be missed.
