For anyone who does not know, the Grand Theft Auto series stepped into the limelight after the release of Grand Theft Auto 3 for the PS2. Since then the controversial series has drawn criticism from politicians and anyone else who can't appreciate the sheer joy that the GTA games have to offer. GTA 3 as you could guess was not the first game in the Grand Theft Auto series but followed some less-than-well-known PC games made in the 90's that to say the least weren't as great as the new generation of games. The basic gist of the GTA games is you are a low level criminal who starts out on the bottom rung of the criminal empire ladder in either Liberty City (a city loosely based on New York City), Vice City (a fictional city in Florida that is based off of the setting of the famous movie Scarface), or San Andreas (a state with three cities based on Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas). The revolutionary open ended game play lets you steal cars, shoot pedestrians, and generally do things that would place people in jail for life with no real life consequences. Now, this is where I will say that most of GTA's appeal lies; in the fact that it lets people escape the trouble of their daily lives and escape to a city where THEY are the BMOC. The game allows you to do whatever, whenever you want and take out real life aggressions on virtual people. I personally, do not buy into any of this political propaganda nonsense that claims GTA makes you comit real life crimes, because I have played GTA since I was twelve (starting with the "less-than-well-known" Grand Theft Auto 2 on PC) and I have never committed a real life crime. Alot of time spent in the games will not actually be getting you anywhere in the world of GTA. Many people have hours of fun just wreaking havoc and killing as many as they can while avoiding the boys in blue until eventually our boys in green (the army) are forced to intervene and take you out. With that said, let me get onto my favorite part of the game the missions. The missions in all three games have well written dialouge, are fun to play, and satisfying to complete. There is also an endless array of side missions, from becoming a vigilante police officer and silencing the other criminals in your GTA of choice, driving an ambulance from the scene of accidents to a hospital to save the lives of your passengers, or getting behind the wheel of a firetruck to put out blazing infernos. Each of the games also have varying different side missions depending on which game you choose. The voice acting is always terrific, with some of the games having big screen movie stars direct you in your missions of mayhem. All in all, these games are excellent, thats the only word I can think of to describe them. They are an absolute joy to play, whether you just want to mess around and go on a killing spree or get down and dirty with the cities most ruthless crime lords and complete missions you are guaranteed to have an absolute blast.
