One of the most enjoyable RPGs for the original Playstation. Highly recommend for all RPG fans. Better than Grandia 2.

What sets this apart from Grandia 2 were the characters, the lighter plot, brighter graphics and the way the story progressed. Unlike Grandia 2 the plot doesn't get all dark and serious on you from the start and continues along with it until those with low tolerance for the story loses motivation to continue on. While Grandia's story may start off as light and innocent the story moves along at a much better pace that actually keeps you interested while still enjoying it as it goes along until the very end. The characters in Grandia are also very colorful and fun. Compared to the more darker, emo, overly dramatic, and just plain boring characters of Grandia 2, I enjoyed watching the characters in Grandia develop more and having them interact with various people and items to see how the characters reacted much more.

About the only thing both Grandia 1 and Grandia 2 have in common is the fact that the gameplay and battle system are exactly the same as one another and they're both very easy to get into once you get used to it. But for me where Grandia 2 failed is by having a very dark story with poorly done pacing that wasn't enough to keep you interested in playing until the end. With its bright graphics, surprisingly engaging story line, fun characters and simple to get into gameplay, I can easily say that this game was one of the best RPGs for me during the Playstation 1 era.
