Ever wanted an RPG with a fast battling system and lovable characters? You've found it.
Just because of that little rabbit dude and the reception this game had recieved, I decided to download a ROM. Turning it on, I thought to myself "I'll give this game an hour." I ended up playing it for 6 that night. It was astounding.
The game looks gorgeous. compared to, say, FF7 which had character models and a flat background, Grandia has an interactive 3D environment and the character sprites look much better than FF7's, having much more color and detail. The game does have blocky environments and it does drop in framerate, but I have no problem with that.
The game plays great! The battles are quick and the grind is low most of the time. There are a few instances where you'll have to kill the same bunch of enemies to level up so you can take down an opponent. It was this one part that kept me from completing the game, but I'm eager to go back to Grandia as soon as I find my PC controller, I want to complete the game entirely.
Unlike most RPG's, this game has a very good sense of humor. It's very lighthearted and even childish at first, but through the first 10 hours you'll get attatched to most of these characters and won't even know it. Because of this, I doubt you'll find one character you won't like in this game. Though the story is sort of generic, it's still very, VERY EPIC. More importantly, it's the characters that makes every moment last. When there's a funny moment, you'll definitely laugh at least once. When there's a sad moment, you just might cry (I didn't cry on the outside, but I did on the inside). One character in particular, Guido, a rabbit-like traveling salesman who seems to know everything and tends to rip you off with everything you'd do involving him, like recovering. He's my personal favorite. I should talk about the other characters, but you can look it up on youtube. I should know, you ARE reading this through the internet, right?
The game controls well, both in combat and exploration. There's controls to move the camera, move, etc. There's also the right analog stick that's preset with automatic moves and options without scavenging the menu, as if the battle system wasn't fast enough.
I haven't finished the game, so I can't say much other than this is an RPG so there is little to no reason to go back to it, unless you'd like to spend ANOTHER 30-60 hours of your life with Grandia... I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Over all, if someone who isn't fond of the RPG (Like me) says this game is near perfect, Imagine what the RPG fan would think. Buy this game on the PSN, it's 10 bucks for 60 hours of game and a bunnyman who steals your Gold and kills, nothing could be better than that. Just throw out 10 bucks, you won't regret it... I mean, I'd pay 10 bucks for Grandia even though I already have on the computer. I paid 90 bucks for DNF, after all.
