The game is obviously targeted at a select group of people. If you fit in that group, give it a shot.
Green Day: Rock Band is a lot like The Beatles. It has a linear career set up taking you through the band's lifespan, it features a massive amount of songs from the band it's named after, and it has a lot of collectible photos and videos. It also features the challenges that were in The Beatles: Rock Band. So basically, it hasn't changed much. Honestly thought, why should it have to. The Beatles wasn't broke, so it's not worth fixing.
Green Day does lack something that The Beatles had. Unfortunately, the unique visual flair that The Beatles had is gone here. There are only 3 venues, and they're nothing too exciting to look at. The Beatles featured a lot of eye candy, and I am kind of disappointed that this installment couldn't do the same. Then again, I guess Green Day wasn't tripping on LSD enough to have cool dream-likes sequences. How disappointing. Still, The Beatles was really the only game in the series with entertaining venues, and I still greatly enjoyed the other games. At least the character models look pretty, right?
Green Day does have an advantage though... A fair amount of the songs are a way more fun to play. Fast paced guitar riffs, and crazy solos aren't easy to find in a Beatles' song. On the other hand, they're almost necessary in Green Day songs. It features its fair share of slow songs, but the higher the difficulty, the more fun the songs get. As a huge fan of Green Day, I was happy to get my hands on their songs.
Vocal harmonies return. They're still frequently featured in songs, and they still work pretty well. I'd say I prefer the harmonies on The Beatles, but they're definitely more about the vocals than Green Day, and they still have some some wild harmonizing for you to do. I'm excited for Rock Band 3, mainly because I get more bands to harmonize with. Two just isn't enough!
The drum trainer returns, along with its partner Tre's greatest hits, which happens to be the biggest challenge for virtual drummers I have ever seen. You are not a true master of the plastic drum until you have completed all of Tre's greatest hits. In other words, you are not a master of drums, because I'm pretty sure it's impossible. Can you handle 74 brutal challenges at 100% speed? I doubt it. This will test your skills, and it will test 'em hard.
On the disappointing side, I didn't see a music store, which might mean that they don't plan on releasing any more Green Day songs. That disappoints me, because a lot of their good songs from other albums besides the main 3 featured (American Idiot, Dookie, 21st Century Breakdown) are absent. Although The Beatles didn't go wild with DLC, they did add more songs to keep the fans happy, and I really hope that Green Day does add DLC at some point, even without a store on the menu.
Basically, Green Day: Rock Band is made for fans of A.) Green Day and B.) Rock Band. If either of those aren't your cup of tea, skip this game. If you're a fan of both, you need to check this out. It's a great game, even if it lacks the visual spark of The Beatles.
