Gregory Horror Show is a surprisingly good title!

User Rating: 8.6 | Gregory Horror Show PS2
Gregory Horror Show is a unique game. That's not a bad thing. In fact, it's perhaps the greatest thing about this game. This is understandably a one-off game and not many people, unfortunately, have played or experienced it. But that's their loss. I highly recommended this game to anyone who wants a fresh and entertaining gaming experience.

Story: The story starts off in a sort of eerie way. Basically you're a child who gets lost in the woods and you just so happen to stumble into Gregory's Hotel. You meet Gregory, the evil, scrawny looking landlord who has an unhealthy obsession with his "guests". Gregory offers you a room to stay in and you quickly learn that you cannot leave the hotel alive. When Gregory leaves you, you wander the hotel when you hear a cat meowing for help. Of course, curiosity gets the better off you and you enter his room. The cat explains to you that in order to escape the hotel you must find the spirits of the guests and return them to the after-life and personally hand deliver them to the Grim Reaper. That's when the story gets really interesting and fortunately I'm not going to spoil it for you. The story is a great game plot and is totally unique. There's lots of great moments and twists, but don't expect an epic story or philosophical message in the plot.

Gameplay: You play as a boy or girl (depending which gender you chose at the start of the game) and your mission is to escape Gregory's Hotel. It plays a little like an RPG and a little like a survival horror title. You can walk, run, sneak, peek through keyholes, and talk to people and so on. But the unique aspect of the gameplay is the clock that sits in the corner of the screen. You need to understand the fundamentals of your clock if you are to succeed in the game. Each spirit has a routine and it's your duty to discover their routine. Perhaps they might be in the library at 3 o' clock or walking a specific route in the hotel for a duration of 30 game minutes. The clock is a nice addition and makes exploring the hotel and investigating fun instead of it feeling like a chore. The game is unfortunately a little repetitive at times and you will get frustrated at some point in the game because you may have missed a clue or something along the lines of that. This is not an easy game, it is however a challenging and rewarding game if you persevere.

Graphics: The art design is totally fresh. Each character model has cube heads and small bodies with paper arms and legs. They all glow with personality and charm and are unforgettable. It also adds to the eerie atmosphere of the game world and is a great juxtaposition on the innocence that this games cheekily exploits :). The environments are quite macabre and dark but there's not a lot to them. They are solid and functional, they don't clutter or overwhelm the player but they're not outstanding or memorable. Sound: Solid voice acting throughout and each character sounds just as creepy as they look. The music is great too. There's no annoyance in the soundtrack so it won't grate on you as you play. It's worth a mention about the music when a guest is chasing you. It gets more loud and vicious; it speeds up and adds to the excitement and horror. The sound effects are okay, nothing special. Doors and floorboards creek, the usual sound you'll expect to hear.

Overall: This great game is one you should look into. It's selling cheap now and you can get it quite easily. If you're still unsure of it then at least rent it but otherwise this a highly recommended purchase.
