Hockey on the go, just don't expect much.

User Rating: 6.1 | Gretzky NHL PSP
Gretzky NHL is one of the first games out for PSP. Playing this game was a little fun and it looked decent, but somethings that were missing made this game feel rushed. For one thing, there is no commentary at all. I can't remember playing an NHL game without commentary since 1995. Except maybe NHL 2003 for GBA, but GBA and PSP are in different leagues. Plus GBA had All-Star Baseball 2004, which had a lot of commentary for a cart based game. So I see no reason for Gretzky NHL to have no commentary, except that they were lazy.

In terms of features, there is exhibition and season modes. Season mode is pretty much standard allowing you to play a season with your favourite team. Options include the standard trades, free agent signings and roster editing. Except that editing your rosters is anything but fun, thanks to a complicated interface.

The game play in Gretzky NHL was average, nothing to write home about. Control seemed a little sluggish at times and there are no big shots or checks that EA Sport fans are used to. Which leads me to the million dollar question, why didn't EA release NHL 2006 on PSP? On the box of Gretzky NHL, there is a note saying that it's the only hockey game on the PSP. Maybe, if there was more competition 989 Sports might have put some more effort into Gretzky NHL .
