Decent, but a large step back from GTR2
GTR2 was by far the best game so far in the series. This one takes a fairly large step back. The menus are horribly designed, cluttered, and are tough to follow at times. For some reason Simbin felt the need to drastically change the setup screens which make it very tough to setup the car using cross weight and/or diagonal roll strategies because you have to keep switching back and forth.
But the main thing is the gameplay. The cars now are more like driving tanks than FIA-type cars. They plow through the corners and are very inconsistent from lap to lap. A lot of the models in this game are meant to be driven using diagonal roll and many times that means a lot of steering with the back end of the car -- I have yet to find a way to get this physics engine to do that.
Other comments: The graphics are not all that much better than GTR2. They are different, but in many respects I'd say they are different in a bad way. The damage model is still pretty much awful. But again the biggest note to make -- The M3 GTR in GTR2 is spot on with the real thing -- Every one of the M3 models in GTR Evolution is pretty far off.
Is it a playable game? Yes. But even if you are a sim racing pro, this game will make you want to yank your hair out because it takes all fun out of the search for good setups.
