Guild Wars 2 is the MMORPG a lot of people have been waiting for. A very welcome refresh on the genre.

Guild Wars 2 is one of those games that are not focused on breaking new ground, instead ArenaNet chose to improve almost any aspect of the classic MMORPG formula. We can summarize the biggest improvements as follows:

-No going back and forth to get quests and turn in quests.
-Beautiful graphics with the right flair of art and medievel fantasy.
-A story mode that gives you a sense of progression while you still do quests in zones. The neat thing is that it has slight variations even if you create another character of the same race.rn-No monthly fees, which is something that is becoming more common nowadays.rn-Very well written story. You can even build on that experience by getting Guild Wars books by Matt Forbeck and J. Robert King.rnrnThe most striking aspect of the game is that besides all the technical details and the unavoidable comparisons to other MMORPGs, is that this is all about fun. The developers tried real hard to remove or minimize the boring aspects like the grinding, a waypoint system that makes leveling without mounts a breeze. All of this with, and I have to repeat it, beautiful graphics. The views are so great that they are in fact part of the achievements you can get in the game, by going to certain areas that are perfect to watch the zone where you are questing. rnrnThe combat system is markedly different since in here you can actually shoot or strike in a certain direction even without creatures being there. That makes dodging a part of your actions as a player and not merely a stat. The sensation of the hack and slash while you outsmart your opponent by moving to the sides or hitting their back is the kind of thing why this game is all about the fun.rnrnThe downside of this game are the professions, which although they are not exactly terrible, they are nothing to write home either. It is more like professions are an accesory instead of giving you something that you strive to truly master. That being said, gathering materials is an entirely different story. You can deposit what you gather directly to your bank from anywhere in the world which helps reduce trips to empty your bags.rnrnThe trading house is the marketplace where you sell and buy weapons, armor and other goods. In here, ArenaNet truly did an amazing job. You can sell stuff wherever you are, check the price of something while you still are deep in a cave. About the only thing you cannot do is pickup items or money from sales, which still requires a trip to your nearest trader. Oh, and that means that you can either go to an outpost or small town with a trader if you don't feel like going to the big city.rnrnIn conclusion, if you are an MMORPG fanatic, by all means you owe it to yourself to try Guild Wars 2. It might be the best game of the year as far as you are concerned.
