...and That Is How The West Was Won.

User Rating: 8.9 | Gun PS2
Gun is a western based action adventure game made by Tony Hawk developer Neversoft, who also brought us the addictive Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 for the Playstation. As the main character, you play as Colton White (Voiced by The Punisher's Thomas Jane), a cool and mysterious cowboy on a trail of revenge for his loved ones and he gets to explore the wild west date back in the 1800 with nothing but a horse and saddlebagful of weapons.

The storyline in Gun is undoubtedly the most gripping aspect of the game and it starts off really strong as Colton White is on a hunt for wild animals with his father Ned White, who is this grumpy looking old man played really well by Kris Kristofferson. As they collect their pay on the steamboat, the passengers are brutally ambushed by a group of renegade soldiers and it's up to Colton and Ned to straighten this mess out. But however, not only did Colton manages to escape from the renegade soldiers' ambush, but he also lost his father on the attack and to make matters worse, Ned claims that he is not Colton's biological father before he died. Colton now has to hunt for answers from then on and seeks revenge to those responsible for the savage attack.

As the title suggests, you get to use lots of weaponry in Gun such as pistols, shotguns, sharpshooters, rifles and bows, all exclusively from the Western timeline. You can switch weapons at any time and all of your arsenals pack a great punch altogether which makes selecting them a tough decision. You mainly fight bad guys from a third-person perspective but you can zoom in when you're using the rifles, sharpshooters and bows. There's also a gimmick called the Quickdraw Mode which entitles you to shoot enemies with your selected pistols in a real fast rate since it goes in this bullet time mode, and you don't even have to reload your weapon as you plugging it in.

Between the story mode you have the choice to pursue side missions in order to upgrade your character. The side missions consist a number of western type stuff like bounty hunting, pony express, poker matches, animal hunting and so on. Chasing bad guys from wanted posters and doing errands for the sheriffs are tons of fun but it really isn't necessary because upgrading your character is kinda pointless. Colton's stats will increase after completing certain side missions but you don't actually feel any difference since Colton White is already an extreme powerful hero who is resilient to any types of damage and can just drink his whiskey to immediately replenish his health. But by doing errands will also reward you to a lot of cash and you can use them to buy weapon and health upgrades.

If you are to exclude all the side missions that the game has to offer, the overall storyline and gameplay will make the game feel extremely short. Gun has some breathtaking moments which really draws you to the game closely, but the plot tends to feel very rush. Colton has some serious issues that he has to deal with but before you know it, all problems are solved fairly quickly, Colton's allies and loved ones are killed brutally in a sudden way after barely knowing them too well and in short, Gun is just too short (Pardon the pun) to be fully appreciated.

To wrap it up, the world of Gun is an outstanding adventure. Riding on horseback to travel from place to place and seeking revenge the Clint Eastwood way are undeniably amusing and pronounced but it's too bad that Gun feels very rushed because the framework and the core mechanics are simple and enticing. But the whole thing is done in such a hurry that it isn't more to this game and it's difficult to judge it's overall contents. Gun is without a doubt a must buy or rental just because it's a fun game to play, which really defines the true meaning of justice...and that is how the West Was won.
