The time: 1880. The place: The West. The man: Colton White, a rough-around-the-edges Western archetype who hunts and sells game for a living, under the guidance of his knowledgeable father Ned. After a basic tutorial section that ties into the inciting incident for the story, you find yourself in Colton's shoes on a quest, to quote the box copy, experience the brutality, greed, and lust that was the West.In the game, several minigames are included in Gun. As you progres through the game, you can opt to complete side-missions, including poker tournaments, cattle herding, law enforcement and bounty hunting. Using money obtained from these side-missions and finding gold veins, you can purchase upgrades to your items. While White's world can be quite striking -- leaves fall from trees in green valleys while frogs croak and crickets chirp in the background -- the Wild West presented here is underpopulated, and players soon realize they are in a small, sterile territory. Exploring it gets old fast. Ultimately, there is too little to do. Even the side missions, such as hunting rare animals and capturing wanted criminals dead or alive, seem tacked-on and grow repetitive. The graphics are very good, but the frame rate seems to lag at certain points. Also, that famous walk-through people gag is in this game, which takes away some realism. The main story is short but is very well done, and the bosses are scary and fierce, which is good. As for the gore, it can go way too far, and you can actually buy a knife and scalpe your victims. Gory as it may be, that's the Old West, for ya. This is a very good game; if only the main story was longer.
