Many people would immediately write off any free game as being overly simplistic, or just not worth playing. However, those people would be missing out on the great game that is Gunbound. The premise of gunbound is very simple, you play as tanks on a two-dimensional plane. There are two teams, of these tanks. You aim by setting your angle and powering up your shot. Depending on the power placed behind your shot, your shot will go a different distance. There is also wind present, which affects your shots, and makes it possible for some very interesting boomerang shots. The gameplay is simple to understand. You will quickly find yourself able to line up shots from long distances, and hitting your target. If you have ever played any of the 2D entries in the Worms series, you pretty much already know how it goes. However, there is a great level of depth in this game because of the different tanks, avatars, and maps available. First, the tank options. There are several tanks available, each with it's own sets of advantages and disadvantages. Some tanks, like the Boomer, are difficult to aim but very powerful. Others, like the grub, sacrifice power for versatility. Most of the tanks are fairly balanced, and have their place in the game. Some tanks, are even reserved for those brave enough to choose a random tank to start their match. With all these tanks to choose from, you may very well find yourself trying to figure out the nuances of all of them just for the fun of it. Next, there are an assortment of different avatars available. You get an avatar by purchasing individual pieces of it from the in-game avatar shop. You will have the option of either paying with Gold (the in game reward for different achievements, like kills) or Cash (which you pay for with a credit card on the game's homepage). These avatars not only change your appearance, but also your performance. They boost particular aspects, such as damage or defense, of your tank. The effects range from miniscule to earth shaking, but can be avoided, if you choose, by playing on a non-avatar server. Finally, each map has its own strategies applied to it. Some maps are very thin, and leaves players open to getting "Bunged" (being shot off a cliff, or dropped through the ground.) Other maps have interesting hills and walls that make aiming difficult. All in all, if you want something fun to play, and you don't feel like paying a dime for it, download Gunbound. It is worth every penny...or...not as the case may be.
