So much wasted potential

User Rating: 4 | Gundam Versus PS4

The Good: Absolute ton of Mobil Suits. I'm not well acquainted with the Gundam universe, aside from Gundam Wing, but I can tell that each franchise is well represented.

The indifferent: While there seems to be a handful of arenas, I'm fine with that. And the whole not translated into English thing for the dialogue, I suppose I can live with.

The Bad: Combat is terrible. Maybe it's just me (I doubt it) but I spend far too much time chasing opponents, trying to get in range of certain attacks. With the ways things are with certain suits, Epyon comes to mind, it's nearly impossible to get within range of an enemy and be effective. It could just be me but trying to get combos on a single opponent is nearly impossible. I might get one or two hits in before having to chase down the opponent. Plus the lock on system means you don't have free rein on the map, which I can see being good at times, but it prevents you from seeing attacks from other enemies until it's too late. It's just too frustrating to just make it into range of an enemy, only to have them leap across the map and then be blindsided. You could switch opponents but since there doesn't seem to be a good counter system, what's the point. Maybe I'm missing something, which is entirely possible. With combat being the primary attraction of the game (notwithstanding the chance to pilot so many suits), combat should have a nice flow and, to me, it doesn't.

Conclusion: I admit the only other Gundam games I've played are the Dynasty Warriors ones from a decade ago and I don't expect this one to play the same. However, I do expect combat to flow nicely and for me to be able to attack opponents without spending more time chasing them than attacking. I would love to spend more time with this game, getting to know all the different mobile suits and playing ones I've played in Dynasty Warriors, plus the other ones, but combat is just too stilted for me to want to spend the effort.
