A letdown of a sequel to the first G.U., but still worthwhile for the story continuation alone.

.hack//G.U. is the newest series in the .hack universe, an RPG franchise in which you play a guy playing an MMO. Sounds kinda silly, I'm sure - but the games in the series are actually quite good, with fast action and an engaging storyline. G.U. 2, as you might expect, is the sequel to the first game in the .hack//G.U. series, continuing where the last title's story left off. The battle system and graphics already surpass those of the first four games. The story revolves around a young kid named Haseo, who is searching for a way to help his friend within the World who has been stricken by comatose. The story itself is expanded and is enjoyable this time around, keeping the player interested enough to travel through the rehash-ness which is the gameplay. I won't knock the direction that Namco Bandai took with the game, or call the action itself boring. But when you're basically playing the exact same game as before, going about the same boring sidequests - you can't help but feel quite a bit cheated. As some reviews have pointed out - if you're into .hack, you're probably stuck with the series for the long haul now - for better or worse. G.U. Vol 2 isn't the game that's going to get you into the series - as a matter of fact, choosing this game as a jumping-in point would be ill advised. But if you're already a fan, you know you're gonna buy this game anyway. Hopefully in the next title, Namco Bandai will improve the game in critical areas. They won't of course - as I've said, either you're gonna buy it or you're not...changes be damned - and that's kind of a shame.
