First, IMO Half Life was the best PC game of it's era, though not all at the same level of greatness. Well, years have passed and with Half Life 2 they've completely redone the engine to a remarkable degree. Yet it still feels like Half Life, the same sense of horror and foreboding at times, the same scary helicopters, the same dangerous soldiers, some of the same monsters. The graphics are the best I've ever seen, and the engine allows for amazing interactivity with the environment. The music is sparse but effective. The gameplay varies quite a lot from open environments with boats and buggys, to enclosed haunted-house environments with monsters around every corner, to making your way through the tunnels and burning buildings in City 17. Admitting I haven't played most of the GOTY candidates, let me state they can't beat this game. Cries masterpiece from every exploding barrel!
