Only Good. And Major Online Flaws.

User Rating: 7.4 | Halo 2 XBOX
Sadly, Bungie has bungled Halo 2 in a variety of ways. The question is, could a game ever live up to the super expectations of set by the original. This game surely doesn't. Part of the problem is that we've had 2 years of good, bad, and in between XBox games to compare against since the original was released. While Halo (1) was unique, new, and groundbreaking, Halo 2 is somewhat more of the same. Basically, its the same game with with all the bells and whistles as promised except: - The campaign mode story seems less compelling, is much shorter, and less balanced for inexperienced players even on the "easy" setting. This will detract people new to the franchise. - The graphics, while somewhat improved in the cut scenes, are hit and miss in the actual game play. The use of normal mapping can create a variety of interesting textures (just as it did in Chronicles or Riddick) but can also result in a "muddy" look (just as it did in Chronicles or Riddick). Many dark areas lack definition, making it often hard to see even the "orange" (grunt) enemies. - What was to be the crowning jewel, playing Halo 2 online via XBox live is severely hobbled. Bungie's innovative "Matchmaking" system would be great if it was fast and efficient. Unfortunately, its dog-slow, taking anywhere from 3 - 5 minutes to find matches and start a game. The lack of lobby (other than a10-second countdown) dilutes the community aspect of the game. Worst yet, you cannot choose the game type and options unless you populate your game 100% with friends. People can't browse and join in on the games you want to play and/or host. Overall, while the new entry into the franchise offers a few new goodies, the release is disappointing at best.
