The Master Chief Collection for the Xbox One contains the first four Halo games (1 & 2 are Anniversary editions), every multiplayer map ever made (six have been re-created), the Nightfall TV series and more on one disc. It's a huge collection that's great for both new and old fans. However, this is also too much of a good thing. It can be a very overwhelming endeavor for anyone new to the series. With so many options and menus available, you would think the developers would've chosen to port the games into separate discs. That would've been preferable, but nevertheless, this is the definitive way to experience the series.
The package includes "Halo: Combat Evolved -Anniversary Edition", the 2011 remaster originally made for the Xbox 360. It has been graphically re-hauled to display in 1080p and 60 FPS. Unfortunately, it does not feature the Firefight mode that was included in the 360 version. However, the multiplayer maps are now featured in their original engine form. The big inclusion in The Master Chief collection is "Halo 2: Anniversary Edition" which features exclusive CGI cutscenes, more dynamic sound effects and updated gun models. Six of its multiplayer maps were also remade using the updated graphics engine. "Halo 3" is the least visually impressive of the four titles. It has been upscaled to 1080p/60 FPS, but the game was not revamped in any way. "Halo 4" was also just ported over, but the graphics are still impressive. Finally, "Halo 3: ODST" is not on the disc, but can be downloaded for only $5 from the Xbox Store.
Overall, this disc is an essential for any Xbox One owner or Halo fan. It had major matchmaking issues when it first launched, but the developers fixed it with updates. Given its content, the game does take over 65 gigs of hard drive space. However, this is one game that many players will never uninstall. There are so many ways you can experience the games and so many multiplayer modes and maps, that some will probably never tire of it. I think it's up there with "Killer Instinct" as one of the best exclusives available on the Xbox One. I'd rank it with an 8.5 out of 10.
