An homage to old school side scrollers. Totally awesome and worth 1200 points
The Good:
I'm a huge fan of the NES contras, specifically Super Contra. This game is a direct homage to the old school contra games with some added abilities such as speed dash and purchasable upgrades. The weapon upgrades are awesome. The unlockable characters are fun to use and give an incentive to finish the game. The level design is fantastic and the constant non-stop action keeps you playing to the break of dawn.
The game is difficult. The learning curve is STEEP; with the lack of difficult games out there its refreshing to get something that is actually challenging. I love the the difficulty and its not unfair difficulty. The game is only as difficult as you let it be. Gamers nowadays are spoiled with child-like difficulties. This game is for true gamers.
The Bad:
There are a few cheap deaths, few and far between, such as not pressing A at the right time and missing jumping onto a helicopter after beating 3 bosses in a row.
I wish the music was as good as old school Contra games, but the music is pretty much non-existent. Ah well.
These reasons listed above are why I give this game 9.5 and not 10.0. But its clear that these problems are very minor in the overall picture.
This game deserves more than a 7.0 Gamespot.
