While nothing new in the turn-based JRPG world, Hexyz is very well done and fun, though sometimes repetitive.
Hexyz Force doesn't offer anything you haven't seen before, but it balances many traditional JRPG elements very well, solid gameplay design, and has great production values throughout.
The good:
+ Solid visuals -- the character portraits in conversation look great, lots of very nice visual touches in combat, good looking 3d character models, animated cut scenes, and even menu screens and battle summaries look nice.
+ Story is nothing new, but the characters pull it through to make it compelling enough to keep you playing. (Surprise! You play a plucky teen-ager thrust into a hero's role with other plucky teen agers...)
+ Good balance of combat difficulty
+ Adventurers that wander around off the paved path are rewarded with extra items, etc.
+ Crafting system is very easy to use, and plays a significant role in gameplay.
+ Good complexity of skills and equipment use, but it's all pretty easy to use.
The not-so-good:
- Not many monster models -- you'll fight the same monsters over and over (however, you can put battles in "fast forward" mode to speed it up)
- Dungeon layouts aren't terribly creative -- basic maze after maze. They get tedious because all the dungeons look pretty much the same.
- Minimal voice overs
Overall, if you enjoy turn-based JRPGs, this is a no-brainer. If you're looking for something truly new and creative, pass.
