Even High School Musical fans will have a hard time liking this one.

User Rating: 6 | High School Musical: Sing It! PS2
The Good: Singing mechanics are pretty accurate. Includes every song from HSM 1 and 2. Lets you pause during the songs (unlike DDR).

The Bad: Singing mechanics can throw you off if you don' t know the song. Convoluted system to unlock new stuff. Story Mode lasts about a half hour. Songs are not sung by original artists. Graphics are pretty shoddy.

Review: The IGN review was very good for this game, you may want to check that out for a more detailed review. This game will be as good as you want it to, depending on how much like the songs from HSM. I tend to like the songs, so that's what makes it somewhat fun, though there are so many other flaws in the game that bring it down, even if you like the songs. Story mode only lasts about 30-40 minutes, and there's no way to save your progress in the middle of it either. You unlock new songs, characters, stage environments, and outfits based on how well you sing the song. As you sing, your score is based on how well you can keep in pitch with the song and your cadence (timing). It shows you the lyrics before you need to sing them, but unless you already know the song, many times there is no way to tell when to start singing until it's too late. Understandable flaw though, and playing a new song once or twice helps you to know how the song flows. So since Story Mode is so short, and can only unlock a few things with the limited songs there, the main mode to play is the "quick mode", which lets you choose your singer, song, and stage. Under the options menu, it lets you view your goals on what score you need on what song/stage/singer to unlock new stuff, but without the game guiding you on it, you're basically left to play the same songs over and over again in quick play, randomly guessing on how to unlock new songs/stages/singers.

Also, while choosing your character, it doesn't prevent you from choosing the wrong gender for the song. Most songs here are duets b/w a male and female singer, and you have the option to sing the "first" or "second" part of each song. It doesn't tell you which gender sings what, so if you guess wrong, you're female character will be singing on screen with a man's voice, and vice versa for the male character. :-P

The good thing is that there are like 30 songs total, about a dozen characters to unlock, another dozen different stages, and many more outfits to unlock. The bad thing is the convoluted way of trying to do it. And did I mention the songs aren't from the original HSM? The lyrics and music are, it's not just sung by the HSM cast, which does kinda take away from the coolness of the songs and game.

Lastly, you've probably already seen the generic cell-shaded looking graphics. A crisper and more detailed cell-shades graphics or polygons would have made the game much better, and since other games do it with ease, I don't see why this game couldn't have either.

Overall, I would only recommend this game to hardcore fans of the HSM songs that don't mind guessing which songs to sing over and over again to unlock new stuff. Anybody else can steer clear of this game.
