What could be better after coming home from a long day on the job then relaxing in a comfortable chair, sneaking up behind some unknowing individual and choking the life out of them with garrot wire? I'll tell you what...sneaking into a government building and dressing up as a firefighter after tripping the alarm so you can gain access to a secure area where your target is working away on his supercomputer, completely unaware of the fireax you're about to chop into his skull. Okay, okay, so it's not the most cheerful of games. But what Hitman II: Silent Assassin pulls off so well is an element often missing from today's games: Suspense. You play "47". a retired hitman turned gardenkeeper living at a monistary in Italy until one day a group of Russian-looking thugs kidnap the monistaries sweet old fryer. 47 gets into contact with his old boss, who puts him to work in exchange for information about the whereabouts of the Priest. Through the game, you are challenged with several difficult and rather large maps and some very impressive enemy AI that are not easily fooled by the many disguises you can wear. You can kill anyone you like and wear their clothing or take their personal affects, which comes in handy for the many questioning soldiers and security guards you will encounter throughout the game. There are several ways of completing each level, at the end of each level, your stealth and aggression performance is rated. Get enough "silent assassin" ratings, and some cool unlockables are available. There are certain people who should not touch this game. Children, obviously, and also those who want a strictly action experience as the emphasis placed on this game is strongly stealth. In closing, this is stealth action in the pre-Splinter Cell, infancy stage, and I must say it is a lot of fun. If you're looking for action look elsewhere, if you're looking to sneak up behind someone and put a bullet in their noggin with a silenced 9mm, look no further.
