Difficult But Satisfying

Hive Jump for the Nintendo Switch made me feel like I was a soldier in the movie Starship Troopers, joining the cause to protect my planet from alien bugs ready to kill anyone they see. It was definitely harder to pick up with the control scheme with the jumping being ZL then double pressing for the jet pack, but after the quick tutorial at the beginning was over and the game really started, everything clicked and I had no trouble maneuvering around the hive.

The randomly generated levels felt clean and everything fit together for the most part. Occasionally there would be a small hole that led no where and felt out of place but other than that the levels felt good. The challenge rooms though were one of my favorite things, when in a level there will be a door leading you to a challenge room that from what I saw you focus on platforming your way to the exit, sometimes shooting or blowing up a a few obstacles on the way. They truly felt like a challenge that when I lost was my own fault instead of some bad level design killing me.

My last point for the game with me is definitely how you can play, alone or with up to 3 friends local. At first I had tried it alone and was getting my butt whopped left and right, still reaching the end of level one just to get wrecked in level two. I kept getting a little better each time and it was a motivation to continue trying again and again, but as soon as I got one other person with me the experience changed. While I was dying the same amount, we were lasting longer into the next levels. While my character was out, theirs was taking care of the rest of the enemies around the backpack or they would pick it up before it got damaged. I only got a short time to play it in co-op and only with one other, but I am really looking forward to playing it with four people in total to hopefully make it even deeper into the hives.
