The Best WWII flight simulator to date
User Rating: 9 | IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 PC
The detail in this game is astonishing, the detail on all the planes is incredible although the game is clearly ageing, The huge modding community keeps it alive and have created some excellent mods that really vamp up the game. The amount of planes is incredible with 229 flyable aircraft. Although some are unfortunately unflyable due to intellectual property issues but can be made flyable through modding. A joystick is highly recommended playing this with a keyboard is almost impossible since you have to trim your aircraft to keep it level. There is an auto-pilot so you can watch your bomber turn a runway into dust like a movie. There are difficulty settings you can also make yourself invincible by turning vulnerability off in the settings. It has a very high learning curve even on the easiest difficulty because of the unforgiving nature of this game and its strict policy on realism. There are several campaigns you can fight for the German Reich or fight for survival in the Red Army. The game covers almost the entire span of WWII from the Eastern Front to the War in the Pacific and finally the Battle of Berlin. Also in the 1946 add-on there are fictional campaigns that show what would've happened if World war II had lasted another year with highly advanced Jet aircraft like the Me-262 and the Me-161 Komet. The campaigns are huge and will last you maybe for years. This game is highly recommended for history buffs and those looking for a realistic WWII aircraft simulator since a lot of the market for WWII aircraft simulators are very arcady. This game is highly recommnended although it takes quite a while to get into. A joystick and loud speakers are recommended to get the full feel of being a pilot in the Second World War.
