"I'll let you wear my hat."
For all intents and purposes, you ARE Indiana Jones in this one. Obviously you literally play as him, but you need to use wits, fists, and a whole lot of cunning to beat the Nazis to Atlantis. Thinking creatively and logically is the only way you'll get past the opening screen.
The graphics are beautiful. There's something charming about sprite-work, and it's at its best here. Breathtaking backdrops and fluidly animated characters make it probably the best-looking SCUMM game.
Controls are simple. Use the mouse to do everything. It's worked before and it's just fine here.
The music is Indiana Jones -style, obviously not to John Williams' level, but for a digital orchestra, it sounds remarkably good. Every screen has its own tune and the sound effects fit every action. The voices are spot-on, even the impression of Harrison Ford. Jones is given a slightly smoother, lower voice, but it's still an admirable similarity. All the other characters are superb, including Sophia and even the paper-thin stereotype Nazis and Arabian townfolk, both given exaggerated accents.
It's a long quest, too. If you shy away from a walkthrough (and you should to get the most fun out of this), it's going to take hours upon hours. Add the fact that there are three paths to take through the ending and it becomes an epic point-and-click. And unlike many of its kind where the action has its ups and downs, this is a well-paced, racing adventure. Once you start putting together clues and artifacts, it really cooks.
At the end of the day, it's probably the best Indiana Jones game we'll ever see. And, fortunately, it's newly available on Steam, fixing the decade or so when the game was out of print.
Last Words: What are you waiting for? Fans of point-and-clicks, Indiana Jones, adventure games, adventure-in-general, and basically anyone else owe it to themselves to play this game. And for $5, it's a steal online.
