This game pushes the boundaries of the DS, and manages to pull it off.

User Rating: 9 | Indianapolis 500 Legends DS
Before reviewing this game, it's worth mentioning that the DS's software was designed to only support 7 computer AI at a time, so to have 14 at a time means that only half of them are being controlled at a time, while the others will simply stick to the racing line at a predetermined speed.

The game is split into 3 modes. Single race, challenge and multiplayer.

What's unique about this game is that instead of divide cars by engine capacity or performance etc., the cars are divided by year.

These represent every Indy 500 from 1961-71. Each year has 3 significant cars for you to drive (usually a front runner or a car with pioneering technology), while your computer opponents drive generic cars from that year. In single race, you choose the number of laps (from 10 to the full 200), and then a car from any of the years you've unlocked in the challenge mode.

In challenge mode you'll have to overtake opponents, avoid accidents, and, at the end of each year, win the race from a difficult position. Another challenge you may receive involves two minigames is pitstops. You will either have to change a tire or refuel, which helps to add variety.

The graphics are OK for a DS game, and the background music is surprisingly cool, and so are the historic photos and race footage you unlock along the way.

I would recommend Indy 500 Legends to any racing fan who owns a DS, as well as Indy fans and motor racing fans, who want to learn more about its history.
