Sandbox games need new and innovative things to stop it from being monotonous, too realistic and boring. Despite all the dark and gloomy settings of inFamous, it truly shines out of all such games with its gameplay, story and setting or details.
The gameplay is just down right smooth and solid, "surfing" through cables and wires has never been so satisfying to say the least, its real cool! The game allows you to explore the city free of bounds and chains. If you actually master the control schemes the game can really be rewarding with its beautifully smooth perfomance of going through buildings. You can can be running in the the streets one minute and jumping to a building in the next all the while climbing up and surfing cables to another building in a matter of seconds with smooth and grace. Trust me its not glitches people see, it's their innability of controlling the character!
The game unlocks new moves and powers throughout the game allowing you to try new things and do more cooler ones depending on your karma. This keeps the game fresh and different too. You can find a number of ways of killing the enemies, or stunts they call it. Like when a bunch of thugs gather below a building you can just jump down and ground shock them to death (which is real fun).
The city gives you a real life situation of a city at quarantine and actually shows a possible scenario if it were to happen; thugs running the city casting fear to everyone. That's why the game don't change the enemies, they're just bust up gangs and aren't that smart to be different. When you go running to do a couple of melee moves on them you can see how they run away in fear like cowards while shooting bullets everywhere. The details of this really puts and impression of reality and pitifulness on how the world is. You can see depressed people on the streets cowering and crouching beside fire hydrants shouting in agony "why me?!" or other stuff. Dead bodies left around just like that and injured people on the streets are sometimes surrounded by caring or curious people. It's these details that puts the game to life, not just ridiculous robot a.i. that run and come back after a few seconds when a gun fires (much like in gta). These things will give you a sense of morality and consciousness to do what is right or wrong. If right people would praise you and even take pictures of you, if wrong, they might as well throw stones at you! All the while this makes the city not a drag and persuades you to play it.
The setting and environment is vast and entertaining (literally), with numerous places to scale, surf and do whatever stunts you want to. Sewers, parks and buildings are all detailed and dark or gloomy in a good way. The underground sewers are one of the most amazing places in the game with its lighting effects, water and all. Water is the only obstacle that cole cannot go trough (and chain links of course) which puts a reasonable logic excuse of limits and boundaries in the city (unlike some games where you can swim to death).
The story. What can I say? It strikes you depp in the heart with awe and curiosoity. It's not only great but dark, like the city itself. The narration is well above great and it's comic like presentation fits just right. it actually reflects the citizens of the city and makes you think if the world really is like that (nd yes it is.) The ending would be up to you, good or bad as the cutscene shifts a little according to karma.
Music well um....not much to say, I'll leave you to do the judging. Here and there there's music but not much, though it's good music to say the least.
The game moves like Sly Cooper (remember? great times..) doing missions on different places in one day and moves like a plan though we usually prolong it by side missions. They're available throughout the city and eliminates gangs in an area if you complete it. Clear the whole island and you'll get a trophy. And it's fun and easy enough though the main missions are the ones that are great and unique to play, much like Sly and the gang.
Overall, inFamous puts in an all effort that makes up a truly exciting and amazing game, which really makes it special and memorable in history to come. Truly a must have, sandbox fan or not (and I'm not).
One of the coolest thing I've done is shooting down three reapers using precision while surfing up a cable and I still remember the look of my cousin's face when I done that (not to mention mine's too). It's these little things that keeps the game alive and truly shines out from all other games. The only word you need is "Control", do this and the game will open itself to you, without it, it's like playing a shooter without a second analog stick.
