A leader among open world games, but you might not be entirely satisfied.
Gameplay is right on par with any other open world game I've played (Crackdown, RF: Guerrilla, Incredible Hulk, Superman Returns...to name a few). There is a main story line you can follow, or, while not in a story line mission, you are free to run about the city and participate in any number of side missions scattered throughout the playing area. These are a lot of fun at first, but can become tedious and even boring to complete later on in the game, as there is not a lot of difference between side missions from one island to the next. A neat addition to this open world game is that you have the option to be either 'good' or 'bad,' depending on the choices you make during the game. I did not play through the evil part of the game, nor did I do any of the evil side missions. I base this review only upon my experience, so please, if you have played the game and are reading this review, feel free to express your opinion about the evil portion of the game.
You do not use guns, or drive any vehicles, but Cole consistently gains access to new powers at just the right times. They are very fun to use, and later on in the game, you should have no problem getting from one area to the next speedily. I thought having to recharge your electricity to use certain powers would be annoying when I first picked up the game, but it actually contributes to the validity of Cole's character, and is not really an issue in gameplay.
On to the story. This is obviously not the bread and butter of this game. Cole gets most of his instructions from people in his phone, some of which you never meet, and even when the game is finished, you still don't really know anything about one of them - the one from whom you take the most orders throughout the game. The few graphic novel-like cut scenes were very fun to watch, and the voice acting is a part of this game done very well. For what it is, the story is pretty good, yet there is a good deal of room for improvement.
Pros: Graphics and attention to detail, powers are varied and fun to use, story is pretty good, the environment is fairly large, the characters are believable
Cons: Side missions can become tedious and boring, although good, the story takes too long to unfold
All in all, I would definitely recommend this game to a fan of open world games, but if you are not crazy about them, you may or may not feel like your $60 was well spent.
