Jak 3, the third installment of the ever-evolving Jak and Daxter series, promises to wrap the story up and answer all your questions in some sort of grandiose finish. . . Does the end of this series live up to such promises? Weelll. . I haven't beaten it yet so I'll have to get back to you on that one. But what I can tell you about is the journey to said end and whether or not this journey is worth the trip. Thankfully, Mine and many others biggest complaint about Jak 2 . . the driving and racing around a big city with slow cars that were hard to control . . is gone! phew . . . Yet, the mechanic that system was based around is still present in Jak 3. Basically you find yourself in a fairly large area with little icons on your map. Heading toward one of those of these icons will begin a cutscene and a mission. The game's main storyline is progressed in this fashion. Doing missions will unlock more missions, and earn you items such as guns or armor. . In this way Jak 3 ends up feeling sort of like a big set of mini games . . You do a lot of "drive out and pick this or that up" . . or . . "race these people in this type of vehicle" . . or . . "Shoot all the . . . whatevers" . . . . Every so often you'll come across a mission that actually feels like platforming. . where you have to jump, grab, fight. . switch play between Jak and Daxter. . etc. . and this. . in my mind is where the game shines. Jak 3 tries to do a lot of things all at once. You do a lot of driving, but its not a driving game. . You do a lot of shooting but its not a shooter . . . You do a lot of driving and shooting at the same time. . but its not a drive-shooter. .um.. well. . you know what I mean. . Basically, it has a lot of ambitions and it does all of them fairly well. . It has a lot of variety. . needless to say this means it does not get repetitive or boring. . but it also means that anyone one who misses the days of the original Jak and Daxter or who thinks that the new Jak style is like a watered down Ratchet and Clank is likely to find the same complaints with Jak 3. . . However, this is a very fun game. Don't get me wrong. The variety keeps things fresh. The story is good so far and extremely funny. . A couple of times I actually gasped thinking .. how could they say/do things like this and get away with it!? The game treads a fine line between kid and adult humor . . Jak himself is still a half whiny Jerk who is still called a Hero. . its a tad annoying but Daxter manages to balance out the universe with his large and in charge kind of humor. . All in all this is a good solid game. Its definitely an improvement over Jak 2 . . so if you played that at all, or if you enjoy games like Ratchet and Clank you should give Jak 3 a try. . . The only problem I can foresee is that anyone new to the series would be absolutely LOST story wise if you haven't played Jak 2 . . Is suffering through Jak 2 worth it to not be lost in the better Jak 3? . . hmm. . I give that a good solid Maybe! . . .
