Naught Dog takes a surprising turn delivering a Jak & Daxter racing game, and it's actually pretty good.

User Rating: 7.8 | Jak X: Combat Racing PS2
The Jak & Daxter series is one of the main reasons I even bought a PS2. I love plattform games and Jak & Daxter are one of my favorite game series. But Naughy Dog turned it into a racer, which is a shame. It's not bad at all, but this is not what I wanted!

Naughy Dog is known for giving us the best graphics the PS2 can deliver, though this time around it disappoints compared to Jak 3. The cars look great, but you don't really get those fine environments like you had in the previous games. The game looks pretty good, but Jak 3 blew me away. The cinematics are just as good as ever, delivering some very cool characters and the funny appearance of Daxter.

The sounds are good. The music is actually pretty good with those Rock tunes, though you won't remember them for long. The sound effects are good, and hearing Daxters scared voice during the races really gives the game life.

Jak X is a pure racing game. There is no jumping nor funny side quests, it's only racing. The movies are still there though, which is good, but this is nothing like the previous Jak & Daxter games. The story is set after Jak 3. Jak and his friends are poisoned by Crews wine! And the only way they can survive is to win this racing tournament so that they receive the antidote. This is basicly the story in Jak X. It's very simple, though works pretty well. There are many movies that tells the story, though you won't be thinking much about why you're actually racing. The game has an okay length to it, and will last you around 10 hours. There are also a lot of extra content for you to unlock, such as new cars, making of movies, and things like that. The game also has a pretty good multiplayer, which has a lot of tracks and racers for you to chose from. The single player is overall pretty good. There are 4 cups in all, and you earn new cars all the time. The game plays pretty well, though the cars could have controlled better. A slightest touch into the wall and your car can turn upside down inside out. The game is therefore pretty frustrating and not very forgiving, cause a reset button is neither present. This means you can't reset your car onto the track unless you're standing still upside down! This is truely combat racing, cause you almost shoot just as much as you drive! You encounter several game modes during the single player, which is awesome. There are many cool game modes, and none of them are bad. Jak X comes with a second bonus disc as well. This DVD is a movie telling the whole story of Jak & Daxter. From the transformation of Daxter in the first game, to the reunion with Jak's dad in Jak 3. This DVD is just awesome, cause it doesn't only show all the cinematics, but also a lot of gameplay footage so that the story is told properly. Daxter even tells the whole story while you're watching! This DVD is actually the best thing about the whole game, and is at least 40 minutes long! If you like combat racing, or if you're a fan of the series, you should propably check it out.

The game is very frustrating. The controls aren't that good. No plattforming!
