A good, fun game with excellent play, but lacks in several fields as well.
The Good:
Excellent game play. The duck and cover system works incredibly well, making for good, fun and solid playing. Also, there's a huge variety of weapons, including your standard carbine, assault rifles, shotguns, submachine guns, a grenade launcher, a support gun, a sniper rifle, and four or five different grenades. I also love the way the health system works. If you take damage, you permanently lose part of your health bar, but there's also a little bit that stays and recharges when you take cover. Basic, yet very effective. The levels in themselves are of a decent length. A decent story line with a few well done cinematics wrap it all up.
The Bad:
There's definitely something big lacking in the sound of this game. The walking sound seems off, the gunfire sounds weak and quiet, grenades sound like warped gongs, and the fairly forgettable tinny techno-ish music drowns out most of the overall effects. What makes this worse is that when you turn the music volume down to try and compensate, it lowers the volume of the cinematics as well, pretty much destroying the atmosphere that they create when you have to move within two feet of your TV to hear what's being said. Graphics are decent, but could have been a lot better. Physics are slightly off here and there (jumping looks weird, grenades fly and bounce oddly.) The story of the game is pretty darn good, if you can manage to figure it out. It's complex, and very little detail is actually given to you, making it so that you have to piece most of it together after playing it through about 3 or 4 times. The levels also seem a bit repetitive after a while. And, one of the biggest things I find lacking in this game, is the length. Even fairly novice players should be able to beat it anywhere between 6 to 10 hours. An okay game overall, pretty good considering you can pick up a copy for around $16 CDN. But I suggest you rent it, you'll probably beat it within a few hours. And be forewarned, there are no unockables throughout the game, making beating it feel unrewarding.
