“Killer Instinct: A game that would push the SNES to the extremes“

User Rating: 9.3 | Killer Instinct SNES
Killer Instinct is probably the most unappreciated game in today’s world. Killer Instinct has impacted many people. It has impacted me especially. When Killer Instinct first came out in the arcades, it drew a large crowd of people. Perhaps not as large as it could have since Mortal Kombat was already a big title by that time. However, I believe that Killer Instinct challenged many “would be” companies to put more effort into their future releases.

Killer Instinct, shortly after it scored well in coin-ops, was released for the Super Nintendo and was soon followed by Killer Instinct Gold for the N64. The game possessed many qualities that would not be heard of during that time. For instance, the graphics were really shocking to view since the characters and background almost possessed a certain polygon form. The character and background’s lighting was stunning. The SNES was a technological achievement. It is no wonder Rare LTD. decided to make Killer Instinct for the SNES. Killer Instinct also possessed a great storyline that would give the player a connection to the character and why the playable character was in the fighting tournament.

Killer Instinct had a great collection of playable characters. Some of these characters included Fulgore (a battle droid), TJ Combo (a ruthless boxer), Sabrewolf (a werewolf) and many others. Each of these characters had their own set of skills and fatalities (also known as Danger Moves). What I think Rare LTD. was trying to accomplish is to challenge Midway and their Mortal Kombat franchise. Killer Instinct was also one of the first games to focus on combo moves against your opponent.

Overall, Killer Instinct was and still is a great fighting game. Unfortunately, Rare LTD. and many other players have forgotten this one time great hit. Killer Instinct gets a 9.5 out of a 10.
