Not bad, not bad. I never played KILLZONE 1 so I can't rate the diff between the two however, as a stand alone, it's ok

User Rating: 7.5 | Killzone 2 PS3
I recently decided to take a break from COD MW2 and try some other FPS' out there. The main reason I ended up trying KILLZONE II was because of Gamespot's 2009 year end ratings. If it hadn't been for the fact that I spent a couple of hours watching those reviews I probably wouldn't have even given the game a second thought. I really can't put my finger on the reason why but whenever I'm at the local game rental store, my eyes never seem to 'see' Killzone. I mean I know the game is on the shelf and all and my brain registers a figure with glowing red eyes on the gamebox but that's about as far as it goes. I just, for whatever reason, skip over it. Anyhow, after watching Gamespot's review video's and KILLZONE II having received a fair share of mentions, it piqued my interest. In fact, after watching those vids, I was even excited about getting my hands on it. I mentioned to my son who also happens to be a devout fan of COD that I was going to give KILLZONE a tryout and he who loves everything about video gaming barely emitted a hmm before turning his attention back to whatever it was that he was pondering before I interuptted.

I plugged the game into the PS3 and made the preliminary adjustments for campaign mode. Anxious to listen and watch the backstory which brought me up to speed, I listened intently. Once I got through that I was launched into a gritty, dark world that, in many ways, paralelled some parts of both COD and Resistance. I noticed almost immediately that it was somewhat difficult to do any precise aiming but after an adjustment period I got past that to the point that it was ALMOST unnoticeable. There were a few areas where I found myself feeling a bit disoriented...and not in a good immersive way but rather I found it somewhat frustrating. So much so that I decided to allow myself the luxury of going back and replaying certain aspects so that I take in items of interest that I'd missed on the first go-around.

In the end I felt that this game is definitely above average however it has a ways to go before I would consider it of the same quality as the latest COD's. It has a lot of nice detail in the graphics which kept me in the mood of the game. One of the games strongest suits would be the sound quality both in dialogue and sound effects. I'm not a big fan of music when I'm trying to get into some games and FPS' fall into that catagory so I can't rate that aspect here however everything else audio was pretty great. I felt that the controller/interface was kind of loose especially when it came to aiming. Maybe it's just a matter of slowing down the perspective which I never bothered to do but now that I mention it, I just might go back and give that a try. If that takes care of my beef I promise to comback to edit this statement. It just took an awful lot of time to hone in a target, that is, except for the sniper rifle but that's kind of a gimme anyways.

Overall a pretty decent game but, like I said earlier, needs some work. Is it worth sixty bucks? For my money I would have to take a pass...at least based on campaign mode. I haven't played online so, who knows, maybe that will end up being really awesome, I'll let you know.
