Fantastic multiplayer makes up for campaign shortcomings.
Killzone 3 does one up over its predecessor by not only making it look prettier and giving us more to look at, but by tweaking it's gameplay just enough and adding a whole lot of compatibility with other devices. While I haven't been able to play the game in 3D, I have played it with the Sharpshooter, and it's one of the best FPS experiences I have ever had. Where the game truly shines is in it's multiplayer, which features enough variation on gameplay and progressive character evolution to make up for what the campaign lacks. But more on this later.
Picking up immediately after the end of KZ2, you once again play as Sev. Vesari has just been shot and this is bad news. The Helghast are now no longer holding back and are prepared to destroy the ISA. Sev ends up left behind when the ISA pull off of Halghast and the game goes from there.
To be honest, the story is a bit inconsequential. The series has always made the mistake of never truly capitalizing on the great history they've created. The Helghast are historically the victims of Earth's domination. Then, like something of a model of the Nazi regime, they become a nation of war and set about to conquer. They are every bit as evil as their evil, glowing eyed helmets make them look. As for the ISA, Sev and team aren't much to behold. There were even times I found myself confusing someone else for Sev. Killzone has yet to become a series that make the stories that take place within the games interesting, though the universe created for Killzone is very fascinating.
What shines here is the gameplay. It's fantastic. It's especially fantastic with the Move, and the Sharpshooter is the zenith of FPS gaming on a console. It's truly immersive and it feels like a shooter should feel. Even with a controller, the gameplay is very satisfying, violent, and brutal. It's the closest that a sci-fi game has gotten to resembling an actual war. There are a number of memorable firefights that are fast paced and exciting.
Like I said before, the multiplayer is where this game is really at. The multiplayer itself makes the game feel a little separate. You are separated into two teams and each team has five different classes to choose from, each with their own unique set of skills and weapons. You can also build these classes up by earning XP which gets you new ranks which get you upgrade points. With these points, you can unlock new weapons and skills. The varied classes, upgradability, and the varied objectives within the Operations and Warzone that you don't feel like the action gets old or repetitious. Having all the perphs also adds to the excitement of the gameplay.
I would argue that Killzone 3 is one of the best console FPS's available. That's a mighty thing to say, with the likes of the COD and Bad Company series available. But Killzone 3 has just as good, if not better, gameplay, a fascinating world, and killer multiplayer. If you own a PS3, Killzone 3 is a must have.
