Killzone - not the greatest, but fun either way
The biggest problem I noticed with the game is that the controls don't always respond when need be; there were times that I would be playing this game and I would try to reload my weapon...but nothing would happen. The aiming was clunky as well, but most of the time it was fairly easy to get a bead on a Helghast soldier. The story of the game was good in my opinion, impending doom that leaves only four guys in the hope of an entire convoy heading to Vekta to help the beaten ISA soldiers. The only problem with it was....the execution was horrible, but scenes were pretty...but the movement of the soldiers (Such as when Captain Templar tells everyone to get their stuff together) never express much emotion in their faces. Games at this time were able to do that, very well (ie Final Fantasy X). The fighting was constant, but sometimes a little one sided. It was either too easy, or the challenge was retarded in comparison. There were times when the whole company would be attacking two Helghast and then another moment when there were about 15 Helghast coming at me....and I was the only one firing. So the execution wasn't greatest. However, when the game engine doesn't sputter and brings everyone into it, it leaves a good lasting impression and makes you want more of the campaign mode.
One thing that I really hated about this game was the little problems. It is impossible to sneak, it is impossible to distract, it is impossible to walk past a doorway and not have a Helghast hear you. There were a few times when I didn't even know where I was supposed to go. The most annoying small flaw was the sniper rifle. For some ungodly reason Guerrila thought it would be a good idea to have the scope on the rifle center itself. Which means if you are aiming and you accidentally let go of the analog stick...you lose your aim.
The multiplayer in the game is where it could have shined...but still failed. Online was just horrendous. The game was almost always slowing down and bugs invaded the game several times. Glitches were a common problem as well, such as running and then out of nowhere just dying. Nothing fired at you, no one hit you, no explosive; just dead. Offline was a little bit better of an experience given you had another player that was competent at the game. The game modes were sparse and the amount of levels left more to be desired. Overall Killzone was a good game, but not worth a $50 price tag. Now, buying it used, you would most definately get what you paid for. The game has shining moments of awesome, but they are too far and few between. Me and my friends cherished this game for the multiplayer offline, but there was little else that could keep someone truly interested in this game. If you want a game that can keep you happy for a week or two, go for it. If you want a sparkling gem, go get an Xbox and pick up Halo 2 (which I still have to say that Halo 2 IS NOT the greatest game in the world).
