Bright new idea in a familiar setup.. Final Fantasy and Disney couldn't have been perceived to look so good.

User Rating: 8.4 | Kingdom Hearts PS2
Kingdom Hearts sets new boundaries for gaming. Bottom line. The mix of Final Fantasy characters and references with the Disney characters is seamless. For those of you that are having doubts right now---squash those immediately. When you first pick up the game, it won't feel quite on-key, but within an hour you'll be smiling with surprise at the introductions of new Disney and FF characters into the game, rather than cringing at the strange combination.
Kingdom Hearts keeps graphics fairly simple, but also manages to paint a beautiful array of scenes and character models to go along with beautiful effects. For those of you that are into games with long lives, you'll find what you need in Kingdom Hearts. With the ability to travel back to any any area, you can stop the main quest at any point and go and wander around in the previous levels. All throughout the game, you have the possibility to change your skill sets and swap out the two other characters in your party, and also upgrade your weapon(s) as well. Various items will also be available for you to buy or earn, depending on how much side-questing you want to do.
The combat system is very simple, and sticks to more or less of a hack-n-slash with a few user-programmed buttons for combos and magic attacks. Again, it stays simple---you won't find any 8-button combo moves here.
The music and sound effects are also very well done... not over-done, and definitely not skimpy, either. Seems they managed to hit it right-on in the audio department.
Gameplay is very addicting, thanks to the story. You'll notice that, as you're playing, you'll become more and more drawn into the story itself and find yourself losing hours to moving from one world to the other and completing quests, all in beautifully-made worlds/levels. Overall, Kingdom Hearts is a great addition to any collection, as well as a must-play for any age group.
