An unlikely combonation shines as one of the best games ever produced by both Square and Disney.
Gameplay- Easy to handle and fun to use. Sora will be doing most of the work in this when it comes to fighting, Goofy and Donald provide decent enough support, especially in those tough boss battles when you desperately need a heal but are unable to do it yourself. The battling was a tad to easy for my taste however, I never found that I needed to really use the summons, because I could just pound on the boss with basic and special attacks and eventually destroy it easily. Moving around on the field was easy, but the camera sometimes got shoddy, especially when moving it against walls. Also, I found myself seeing the inside of the Heartless sprites a little too often when my camera messed up. In conclusion, make the general fights a little harder, and make boss fights a little more interesting, instead of just whacking constantly at a foe, make the player figure out a strategy. As to the level building complex of the game, it was fun to work with, though a little frustrating when it took a long while to gain AP points to unlock skills that would seem to be a given (rolling, anyone?)
Graphics- Beautiful. I've only dealt with Gamecube graphics up to this point, but this first glimpse at PS2 graphics impressed me. Facial expressions during cut scenes were dead on 85% of the time, with only a few instances of static stares. I particularily liked how Donald's mouth was animated, the beak bent at perfect angles and times. The environments were dripping with details, and really gave each world the feel of the movie it was made from. All characters were paid attention to in detail, and it made the worlds feel even more realistic. My favorite outfit was probably either Sora's outfit or Riku's heartless outfit.
Sound- The in game music was wonderfully done, and shifted into each other nicely. My only problem with it was that it got repetitive after a while, I wish that it would have either changed or that each tune was longer. I've heard better music on the PS2, but this was still a nice collection of tunes, and they fit the worlds they were put into wonderfully. I particularily liked the Atlantica music, and was humming along with it a lot. The voice acting was done well, and most all of the characters sounded like their movie counterparts. My favorite acting in this was that of Hades, James Woods hit the nail on the head when recreating the personality here.
Storyline- A little linear, but very well thought out. The main characters were easy to become attached to, and though the dialogue sometimes got a little corny, it was for good reason. Each world kept part of its movie plot charm and added to the experience tremendously.
All in all, KH is not a game to be missed by any RPG fan. It takes the charming aspects of Disney and Square and combines them into a thoroughly enjoyable game that will keep you entertained for hours on end. All who own a PS2 should be getting this game. Calling it "kiddy" because it has Disney roots shows how immature your thought process is (I include my 12 year old self in this.)
