What this game lacks in depth and personallity, it makes up for with great combat, crafting and customization.
Kingdoms of Amalur shows us a new angle of the RPG genre, that most RPG developers seem afraid of, they are actually mixing Hack N' Slash combat, RPG features and MMO exploration and design in one great big package.
We are introduced to a world that we have never heard of, and this normally presents a challenge for all game developers, and this game is no exception. However it starts to grow on you after about 6-7 hours, which would seen a relatively long time to many gamers, but let's not forget that this is an RPG, it always takes time to get the hang of it. Ones you get used to it, you will quickly find yourself crafting, smithing and costomizing all of your glorious loot, and there is plenty of loot in this game, so much that you will often have to return to a shop to sell you rightly earned loot(stolen goods,) and thankfully this game has quick-travel, the same style as in The Elder Scrolls series. the combat is fastpaced and very entertaining, but it does have a bit of problems with the targeting system, and often you will find yourself shooting bolts of lighting into the thin air, and wishing this game had the same Auto targeting system as in Devil May Cry. Also I find myself wishing that there were many more fights in this game, because this type of combat system is actually build for near-constant fights, much more than a Final Fantasy game is, so much that I wish that This type of combat was introduced to the FF series, and or maybe just switch worlds, so that the FF series had the same type of exploration as this game does, and the same amount of fight, and the Kingdoms Of Amalur should have as many fights as an FF game does.
However, this game falls short when it comes to story, NOT that it doesn't have story, because it does, and a very interesting story at that, but it's just not being told in the right way. It is almost as if they pulled a "BLIZZARD" on this story, and The company Blizzard is probably that LAST source of inspiration ANYONE should ever take note of, when telling a story. Just like in SKYRIM, this game has world changing events, but they are not being presented in a way that makes you feel important enough, like your character becoming the leader of a world renowned faction, and you are being crowned KING,everyone doesn't show you the respect that you deserve, almost as if nothing has happened. For this fact the story is not enough to make you put down other RPG's in favor of this one, only the combat an enormous amounts of looting, crafting and customisation will truly capture your interest, and that is a shame because the story has FAR more potential than this.
But all in all, this game lives up to modern standards of western RPG's, and there for is worth the full price of the game. Ones you get past the first few hours of gameplay, you will not get bored, but maybe a bit annoyed with certain invisible walls, lack of auto-targeting and minor important story elements.
Thankfully this game has so far not shown a single glitch :-D
