not quite superstar......

everytime a kirby game comes out i hope it comes close to the pure awesomeness that was kirby's superstar for the snes. so of course while i knew it wouldnt be i still had the same hope for squeak squad and in some ways it delivers. squeak squad injects a little marrow into the bone that is the kirby series poorly debilitated cancerous arm. its not that the kirby series has ever been bad but its hit its top and has gone downhill as they dont change up the formula too much. the setup of the game allows the player to keep fighting using air puffs (by flying a small distance off the ground and then spitting at an enemy) if they lose their abilities. this comes at a cost since if you have an ability youll blaze through the enemies like a speeding train through a paper bag. only the squeak squad members (and only a few in special circumstances) and bosses will challenge you at all. some of the new abilities like animal which allows you to dig through dirt and magic which allows you to smack that enemy booty will make vets feel something new. finding treasure chests will allow you to unlock new abilities for your swiped powers which in some cases are retarded. oh wow i can aim my flame breath up or down slightly. YAAAAY! graphics and music are intoxicating as the kirby series has always managed to pull off. the touch screen activity here is pretty tacked on and rather clunky. ditch that touch screen for anything other than storing usefull items like health restoring items or abilities rather than the 1 up combining system (which consists of putting three tiny kirby bubbles into one creating a one up..... wooo.) all in all if youre a kirby vet youll probably be disappointed it hasnt moved on to something greater. if youre a newbie looking for a simple and fun platformer give it a shot as it wont disappoint.
