With probably the best graphics ever seen on the NES, Kirby's Adventure looks great. But what about the gameplay...?
The graphics are the best on the NES and there are some fantastic animations for the various enemies and environments. Compare it to a game like Super Mario Bros. and you could think it was on a different console. The backgrounds always look good, and everything is nicely coloured. The sounds are probably the weakest part of the game. They don't really sound all that good, and are mostly high pitched and annoying. None of the themes really stick in your head, and are mostly there in the background.
The gameplay is unique. Using the wii-mote to control, the d-pad moves Kirby around. By pressing left right and down, you will move and duck. The up button inflates Kirby and allows him to fly. 2 will jump. Sometimes the jump feels a little short, and it's kind of annoying that you have to fly over things that you really should be able to jump over. The 1 button will suck air into Kirby, along with any enemies in your path. By pressing 1 again, you can shoot out the enemy, which has turned into a star and destroy other enemies. But some enemies will (by pressing down while Kirby has them sucked in) give you their powers which Kirby will then use with the 1 button. This is really different to other games and provides a unique experience. Do I keep this power or get another? Which one is best for the enemies and bosses ahead of me? Powers include fire breathing, freezing close-by enemies, shooting a laser beam, wielding a sword, wielding a parasol, and shouting into a microphone. There are many others too. The game has levels with other stages inside of them. There are usually 5 levels then a main boss level. There are bosses in most of the main levels too, but they are fairly easy. You either come in with a power and attack them with it, or wait till they throw/spit something at you, then you can suck it in and spit it at them. They follow patterns, and aren't all that hard.
Scattered within the game are numerous minigames, such as picking up plushy Kirby's in one of those fairground crane games, or duelling wild-west style. These give bonus points and 1-Ups, and others simply allow you to get a certain power. These make the game that little bit more fun.
The game is pretty short though, but there is a bit of replay value. Kirby's Adventure costs 500 Wii Points (£3.50).
