A simple, unique experience
In knytt, you are a creature or person that one heads out a little bit beyond a village. Out of nowhere comes a spacecraft that picks you up and flies to a planet however, the spacecraft crashes and in return of hopefully getting off the planet you are tasked with collecting the parts that flew gosh darn everywhere when the spacecraft hit the planet. The alien's intentions for bringing you here are completely unknown and your character's caricature comes from you whether you be a lonely explorer or business person your character's caricature is something you fit in with yourself. The game environment is one for exploration, platforming and simple logical puzzle solving. The world is focused at making you feel alone and showing you the natural world and only a few manmade structures such as mountains, lava, underground and such while keeping very simple and surreal. For instance, this game has a very simple though artistic design (Paint and Flash) with rectangles that make 2D mountains, tunnels, and almost all of the rest of the world but it is very quiet at presenting itself; trees sway back and forth in the cool wind, or a bug crawling around, or nothing, that is the mood of this game and it prevails at it phenomenally. The sounds are striking to the ears and the tidbits of music have the same simple, naturalness of the graphics.
The gameplay has you search for items, you have a light that acts as a compass (like in Shadow of the Colossus) and it's up to you to find a way there. You can climb up walls, jump and so forth all explained in a helpful intro level but, expect some real backtracking when going from one place to another and no world map means that you will get lost a lot. Then again, the challenge would basically be gone and the world is so fun to explore that you will be glad in the end that you got to see most or the entire multiple paths-to-location world. Beyond that you have a couple of natural obstacles like lava, water, and some very rare, simple enemies.
To date, Knytt is the most unique experience that has ever come along, while not groundbreaking at anything beyond the experience that comes, it is well worth the 3-5 hours you get, though don't forget that it's free and offered here at gamespot.
