Let's face it...most of your survival horror games tell the same story over and over. Evil creatures have you trapped and you only have a few items to help you survive and you must have item A to unlock door B and solve puzzle C to access section D. Kuon has all of this but uses it in such a way that became a fresh breath of air in the genre for me. With the story taking place in Heian-period Japan rather than modern day Anytown, it opens up a whole new level of horror. No longer do you have shotguns to tear the heads off waddling zombies or rocket launchers to incinerate lurching Tyrants...it's more about avoiding the enemy and using your spells wisely. It's also about moving quietly around the grounds as to not draw attention to yourself from the wandering spirits and creatures and finding a more logical puzzle solution rather than gather red and blue gems to open a door in a standard police station. With the historic backdrop and storyline taking from Japanese lore, this is a true survival-horror game that should not be missed. This is no Resident Evil 4, but there's nothing wrong with that at all.
