An interesting indie game brought down by bugs

User Rating: 5 | Lake XONE

Lake is a game where you play as a woman returning to her hometown after decades away to cover her father's post office shifts while he is away on vacation. So during your time delivering packages, You encounter various characters, can take part in side quests, and ultimately make a decision that'll affect your life at the end of the game. In a nutshell, I enjoy what the game has to offer with the story. It certainly has a charm that makes you interested and invested in the outcomes, It feels natural and not something cheaply earned.

That being said, The game isn't without its flaws. The story-related content is quite limited, especially in the second half of the game. And the fact that there is so little to do can make the game a bit boring at times. Lack of content aside, The gameplay is fine for the most part. I am a bit irritated that your character can only walk at a snail's pace though. Even giving an option to walk fast is fine enough but to just walk slowly is a pet peeve that I can't ignore no matter how hard I try.

Also, This game suffers from a number of bugs that are noticeable from the start. After every conversation, The game awkwardly freezes before starting up again. During some conversations, The faces of the characters can be weird distorted. Hitting something with your car can send it flying in the air, which admittedly is kind of funny but still. The lack of polish definitely brings the game down because they're simple, fixable issues that still haven't been addressed. And it's even more frustrating because I actually like the visual design for the game, It has as much charm as the story does, and all of these bugs simply do not do it any justice at all.

The only thing that I would really give them credit for is the addition of the auto-drive and fast travel features. The driving mechanics of the game are totally fine but it can get a bit tedious at times because it's literally all you do. These features alleviate a lot of the tediousness and help prevent the game from being a bore later on when the things to do in the story become rather limited.

Overall: 5/10

I wanted to like Lake more than I did. The bugs are a fixable issue that certainly would have boosted the overall score if they were actually addressed. The lack of content could have been more forgivable if the game had been shorter and if the side-missions were just a bit more interactive than they were. It's the kind of game you take with a grain of salt. It has its moments but it's far from what it could have been.
