This game has two big things going for it: an iconic character combined with awesome gameplay. Forget everything you know about Tomb Raider, close your eyes, and think "high speed dungeon crawler with puzzles and multiplayer." If that sounds good to you, then this is your game. Lara has much less acrobatic finesse to draw upon this time around, but she makes up for it with a huge arsenal and upgradeable explosives. In fact her health and ammo can also be increased, while her speed, defence and damage potential can all be customized by equipping different relics that can be found throughout the game. On top of all this, Guardian of Light manages the impressive feat of mixing equal parts action, platforming and puzzle-solving without ruining the pacing. It all tends to happen pretty fast.
The 2 player mode offers-up a new set of challenges, since some of the tools and abilities are split between the two characters. Lara's partner Totec has a shield and spear to start, while Lara has her trusty grappling line. Lara can get a boost by standing on Totec's shield or jumping across his spears while he throws them into a distant wall. Lara in turn has to pull Totec up to higher ground with her grapple and can even bail him out when he falls into pits.
There are various optional challenges to be completed in each level, as well as weapons, relics, costumes and upgrades to be both found and earned. Combined with the solid multiplayer, this game offers plenty of replay potential on top of being just plain old-fashioned fun.
