This highly addictive game comes with a plethora of features (and flaws).

User Rating: 8 | League of Legends PC
League of Legends comes from the developers of the original, popular Aeon of Strife-esque WarCraft 3 (and, on a less-known front, Temple Siege of StarCraft) custom map DotA. It echoes DotA's competitive feel and fast-paced gameplay, but doesn't quite touch on all the high points and features. League of Legends offers an arguably better matchmaking system than DotA, using a queue system instead of a list of custom games that a player could join. The matchmaker makes a feeble attempt at matching solo queuers with similar players, but often falls short of this mark.

The champion selection screen is polished and presents each champion attractively, displaying their abilities and descriptions of said abilities, although the selection time is often too short to allow more than a cursory scan of each champion. The game is not as newbie friendly as it should be, but as this reviewer has played, it has become considerably more so.

Upon having selected your champion, you then tweak a few subtle attributes about the champion, giving them bonus attack speed or magic penetration for example. This sets up for in-game item builds and stratagems. In addition to these masteries, as they're called (which are similar in working to the way World of WarCraft's talents are), each player can choose runes, which further tweak each champion towards the manner in which the player elects to play.

The game itself is highly unpredictable. There have been dozens of games that were sure to be a victory or defeat, but turned out otherwise. The ability to reconnect from a disconnected game is an outstanding improvement over DotA, where Battle.net would not allow reconnects to games. With dated, somewhat grainy graphics, you may not expect much, but League of Legends overcomes that shortcoming with its re-playability. Each game is unique and it keeps you playing more, as does the competitive nature of the game.

Overall, the game is an experience that everyone should try at least once. You may find that the game is enjoyable, or you may not. With League of Legends being free to play, you've only a couple of hours to lose.
