L4D2 as the last installment centers around 4 survivors battling hoards of undead looking for salvation from the zombie apocalypse. Like the original narrative is non existent. Its left up to the players imagination to sort it out, but what it lacks in story it more then makes up for in replayability and character. The characters and enviornments are grounded in reality with the only thing over the top being the violence and gore. The characters are memorable and well developed. (Ellis's stories are golden) Graphics aren't the best but the audio is excellent. From the thunder of a shotgun to the ambient sounds effects of the enviornments its all well done. L4D2 also boast larger maps and improved difficulty balancing it out rather nicely. But, its pretty much the same flavor in a new wrapper. So if you didn't like the originals taste you may want to try something else. Its one true flaw (besides no story) is the lack of content. Its rather short and the verses modes aren't for everyone.
L4D2 improved on everything its predecessor did well without compromise and Valve as a developer should be praised and commend for it... I'm expecting much more from a third instalment though, a reskin wont be acceptable a third time around.
