Great game for the DS

User Rating: 8 | LEGO Batman: The Videogame DS
I've always had a hard time understanding the point of a Nintendo DS...honestly, who wants to play video games on a screen a few inches square? I bought a DS so that I could play games with my 7 year-old son, who's an enthusiastic DS player, but honestly, I've had a hard time finding anything worth playing on such a tiny screen. Most of the games that I've tried on the DS remind me just how irritatingly small the screen is.

Lego Batman for the DS is an exception; it's an engrossing enough game that I actually forget I'm playing on a small screen. The graphics resolution is very good, and the game is immersive. The game is easy and distracting, with enough puzzles and new levels to keep me interested but always moving steadily forward without any great struggles. There is some repetitiveness to the work you need to do to get through each level, but it never overwhelms.

Another thing I like is that the levels are totally different from the Xbox 360 version of the game, so even though I've already played the Xbox 360 version, playing the DS version is like playing a whole new game, but with all the familiar controls and game devices. The story telling is done exceptionally well through silent -- but clever and brilliantly expressive -- comic-book panels. Extra high marks go to the artists who are able to communicate so much with a simple string of still pictures.

Anyway, this is a fun, accessible game that I'll no doubt spend many hours enjoying, and which gives me another good reason to own a DS (and a way to actually enjoy it).
