I will start off by saying, you don't have to like Star Wars to get this game, and you don't have to like lego.(But who doesn't?) I don't follow Star Wars, and have actually only seen one of the movies. The gameplay is lots of fun, with lots of characters to switch between and lots of stormtroopers and other bad guys to kill. When they die their pieces fall out and its cool. There are lots of things to do, with different modes like Challenge Mode and Free Play. You can try to get all the money to get Jedi Status. You can build your own character to play with in Free Play. The really only bad things about it are the camera sometimes blocks the action and there are no checkpoints. Sometimes you're in the middle of a level and you need to stop playing, you'll have to start at the beginning the next time.
