Lego Star Wars...for which kids?

User Rating: 8.4 | LEGO Star Wars PS2
I got Lego Star Wars for my boys who are 5 and 4 years old. I sat with them and gave it a try and was very pleasantly surprised. The graphics stay tight no matter who or what you are fighting and the mechanics are pretty solid through and through (even if I am doing battle using a teacup). If a difficult area or challenge is encountered. A hole search can usually over come any issue in the game (try all the walls or different objects/characters, etc...) that is blocking progression. It is refreshing having a game that a cheat code or guide is not a necessity to navigate it. There are those unforgiving games that will let progression occur to a dead end because a purple switch was not thrown in the opening screens of the games adventure etc... The game play is challenging enough for the 5 year old, or for the 39 year old as well, especially with the overly dramatic cut scenes or even the jokes that go on throughout the game. The tiny Lego characters even display more emotional range and depth than some of those big Hollywood stars (big name star here) I pay $8.50 a ticket to see on the big screen about half the time. The individualism displayed when other characters are off screen while roaming through the trophy area outside the diner is a hoot as well with small two character battles getting joined from all sides turning into a all out mega Jedi brawl with someone(s) usually getting Lego'ed before it is over. I must admit that finding all the " 'sploder " parts for each level, as my boys call them, is not all that easy but it is attainable and there is just something about having your own complete pod racer or storm trooper transport in the trophy area. The little add ons are just as fun in the game from the mustaches to the brushes or teacups. The added ability to buy hints is also a bonus that helps the little ones get through the game. I do believe that I will be getting the part two as soon as it comes out in September, for the boys of course. Got to give this performance by the Lego dudes a thumbs up with a 8.5 out of 10 for the overall game score.
