The first thing you got to realize about the game “Leisure Suite Larry: Magna Cum DeLaude” is that you’ll either love it or hate it, depending on how you approach it. People expecting a challenging game, which really puts their skills to the test, will almost certainly be disappointed, since the 2004 edition of the cult title proves very easy. Being somewhat short doesn’t help the ratings much, and the flood of negative reviews the game has received seem to be a result of this. The game would profit if one couldn’t finish it in under seven hours (and that number is very much because of the slow and very annoying loading screens. This is undisputable. However, the game has other qualities. This is where the word “subjective” becomes relevant, since these qualities depend entirely on what kind of humour you prefer. According to me, this is where the game comes off strong. My laughter tends to get a bit hysterical when Larry (our obnoxious anti-hero) proclaims he doesn’t like name dropping and immediately coughs the name of some country icon (which I’m not familiar with being a Swedish speed metal fan) to impress the first big breasted girl he comes across. If you feel this time of one-liners doesn’t apply to you, you should avoid this game as you would the Black Death, because “Larry” is packed with them. The plot is the diametrical opposite of any of Shakespeare play. In one word: uncomplicated. Larry does what many male university students do between classes – trying to get laid. In order to succeed you have to manoeuvre Larry when mixing drinks, jumping on trampolines, playing quarters etc. These mini-games are basically the only thing “Larry” consists of. Nevertheless, the variation in dialogue and the hilarious outline of the game makes it a favourite – at least for me. When discussing the production, one has to mention that there are no aspects of the game that gets annoying, except for the aforementioned loading screens (it doesn’t help that he animated girls in the game are cuter than the ones on the screens). Maybe because the game is so simple and requires no advanced controllers this never becomes a problem. The graphics are adequate, but far from stunning and the sound is nothing special. “Larry” is a small time adventure game, that compensate it’s shortcomings through the burlesque humour. Youngsters who are hoping to get good material for their teen needs will surely be disappointed, since most of the episodes ends in anything but nakedness. I reckon the target group, which will appreciate this game, is anyone from 15-30 with a little bit of a juvenile sense of humour. Try it out! And if you do not like it, you’re still my friend.
