There are so many games that include button mashing and
in-your-face content that it gets wearisome. Limbo truly sets itself apart from
all of these.
The atmosphere is dark and intriguing. It uses light and darkness incredibly
well to drawn you in. When you see a monstrous silhouette of a spider stalking you, you freak out. When you see a ray of light, you become a bit more hopeful. The sounds are mostly atmospheric, like running water and the clinking of chains, but the music comes in to add to your angst and relief.
You pass through obstacles using your mind and the occasional quick reflex.
These obstacles range from buzz saws to homicidal kids that force you
to use your environment to your advantage. The further you progress the most
complex the solutions get. It can be frustrating at times, but when you sleep
on it you eventually solve them. The loading feature is also incredibly forgiving
so you don't have to repeat too much. You do get some satisfying "Ah ha!" moments, especially towards the end.
This game truly is a dark and atmospheric gem that deserves a try. The game play is not suitable for the impatient or aggressive, but if you are willing
to push on, it's one of the most distinct and satisfying games you will ever play.
